18 Insanely Useful Essentials To Survive Long Flights

If you’ve ever been on a long haul, you know how awfully uncomfortable and bored you can be. Yes, those cramped seats and never-ending hours can be a pain in the neck (literally). It is, however, possible to turn it into something a little more pleasant.

I’ve flown across oceans and halfway around the world, and along the way I’ve found some items that make long hauls doable. Packing the right things in your handbag can really work wonders! That’s why I made this post, to share my finds with you and hopefully prepare you for your next long haul.

1. Neck pillow with memory foam

This is first on the list for a reason – it steadies your neck which helps you sleep comfortably! Who doesn’t want to be able to sleep on a plane to make the time pass faster?!

2. Silk eye mask

This also makes it easer for you to relax. Eye masks are great when you want to not be disturbed by the cabin lights, or when you just want to feel like you’re “alone”.

3. Airplane phone holder

I always find it challenging to hold my phone or position it on the tray table at the right angle (which usually ends in failure), which is why I absolutely LOVE this item! The ability to go hands-free while watching movies makes it a must-have for long-haul journeys.

4. Airplane pocket organizer

When I fly there are some things I always want to keep close to me, like my water bottle, headphones, and of course my phone. It can be a hassle keeping all of it organized, which is why an airplane pocket organizer is a great choice for long hauls.

5. Travel size perfume bottle

After spending who-knows-how-many hours on a plane, the craving for a shower hits hard. But let’s face it, you can’t always jump in right away, you have to get to your hotel or Airbnb first. That’s where a handy refillable travel-size perfume bottle like this one comes in clutch!

6. Microfiber towel

A microfiber towel is a must-have for any traveler, especially ones who want to maximize space. A smart idea is to bring it in your carry-on! It’s perfect to use as a blanket for staying warm at the airport or on the plane, and also provides extra comfort.

7. Noise canceling headphones

Headphones are a must for any flight, regardless of its duration, but choosing noise-canceling ones is absolutely essential. All the noise in an airplane can be distracting and tiring, and noise-canceling headphones like these will make it possible to relax.

8. Foldable water bottle

Everyone knows how much space a bulky water bottle takes up. Get a foldable one instead and fill it before boarding the plane!

9. Kindle

Flights are… boring. A Kindle keeps you entertained when you’re tired of watching movies or listening to music!

10. Foot hammock

Say goodbye to uncomfortable resting positions with a foot hammock! If you bring this on your long flight you’ll avoid restless legs or discomfort, which I think is great considering how cramped those airplane seats are.

11. Disinfecting wipes

The first thing you should REALLY do when getting in your seat is to wipe down the tray table, arm rests and other areas. It’s a simple step but goes a long way for your health.

12. Compression socks

Dealing with swollen feet is not my favorite thing when all you want to do is be able to relax. Compression socks are great to avoid that, and also minimizes the risk of blood clots!

13. Earplugs

I would say, always bring earplugs – you never know when you might need them! They could be lifesaving when all you want to do is sleep but people are chatting or a baby is crying.

14. Backpack

If you need a good choice of bag as a personal item, get this backpack ASAP! I got it and it’s so good, I will probably only need to travel with a personal item from now on.

15. Cable organizer

A cable organizer is essential for flights as it keeps your electronic accessories neatly organized in one place, preventing tangled cords and making it easy to find the right cable when needed.

16. Travel journal

Bored, again? Get this travel journal to document your travel memories forever! What better place to do it than the airplane, where you get time to actually reflect on your trip.

17. Magic eraser makeup towel

I always travel without makeup, but I know not everyone does. That’s why I would recommend bringing a magic eraser makeup towel, in case you would want to take your makeup off or wash your face on the plane. This towel only needs water to remove your makeup – I’ve used them for years and love them!

18. Snacks

Lastly, bring lots of snacks! Airplane food is not always the greatest, and the portions are not very big. You want to make sure you don’t have to be hungry when you still have hours left of your flight.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!
